Ponciano “Siano” Bartolome

Leonila “Lilay” Elauria

The Story of Ponciano and Leonila

Welcome, dear family! This album is a heartfelt collection of our shared history - moments, faces, and stories that connect us. Our family has grown and flourished over the years, and this album preserves those memories for us and the generations to come. We hope you enjoy flipping through each page, reliving happy times, and celebrating the bonds that make us who we are.

The Bartolome-Elauria family originated from the couple, Ponciano Ramos Bartolome, and Leonila Oleta Elauria.  Ponciano was born on March 10, 1910, in Sta Cruz, Laguna, while Leonila was born on May 6, 1912, in Calamba, Laguna.

The paths of Ponciano and Leonila first crossed at the Franklin Baker Company of the Philippines, located in San Pablo City, Laguna. Both were employed at this company—Ponciano served as an Inspector, while Leonila worked as a Parer. Their daily interactions and shared workplace experiences laid the foundation for their relationship, and it was here that their love story began.

Their romance led to marriage on May 1, 1931, at the Parish of St. John the Baptist, situated in the historic town of Calamba, Laguna. This town holds special significance as the birthplace of the Philippine national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. The union of Ponciano and Leonila at this notable location marked the beginning of their lifelong journey together.

Ponciano was the fourth child in a family of six.  His parents were Braulio Bartolome and Perpetua Ramos. His brothers and sisters were Rosario, Carmen, Ildefonso, Domingo, and Felisa.

Leonila was the fifth child in a family of eight, born to Ireneo Elauria and Teodora Oleta.  Her siblings were Marciana, Leonora, Teodoro, Daniel, Caridad, Juan, and Gloria.

The Bartolome-Elauria family began their journey in San Pablo City, settling near the Banadero River in 19__. This location provided a home for the family during the early years. Following the end of the war, they decided to move to Lakandula Street, seeking a new beginning in a different neighborhood. Eventually, the family found a sense of stability and permanence when they established their long-term residence on Unson Street, marking a significant chapter in their family history.

Ponciano deeply cherished his wife and family. Together with Leonila, they created a warm and loving home, nurturing twelve children – Nelia, Efren, Ruben, Carlito, Romeo, Nenita, Teresita, Ernesto, Cesar, Lourdes, Alicia, and Mario. Their large family stands as a testament to the strong bond and affection that united them throughout the years.

Ponciano was very friendly and sociable. He was a very dignified gentleman, always well-groomed and elegantly dressed, smart, and good-looking. He possessed impressive dancing skills, and his charm won over countless people.  He was everybody’s favorite - loyal, courageous, and charitable to those in need. He was a brave man and a protector to his associates, when facing trouble or difficult circumstances. Sadly, one of his gallant deeds caused his early demise in 1964.

Leonila was an exemplary wife who deeply respected her husband and supported him in all matters concerning their family. Much like Ponciano, she was known for her friendly and sociable nature, which helped her foster positive relationships within and beyond their household. She understood and embraced Ponciano’s appreciation for beauty and order, ensuring that their home reflected these values. Taking on the responsibilities of managing the household, Leonila single-handedly oversaw a wide range of chores—she kept the house clean, prepared meals, did the laundry, dealt with the children’s school requirements, and cared for Ponciano’s needs related to his work and activities. While Ponciano focused on providing for the family financially, Leonila ensured that daily life ran smoothly and efficiently at home. Even during times when the family’s income was not enough, Leonila never complained or placed blame. Instead, she demonstrated resourcefulness by carefully managing their available resources and finding ways to make ends meet. Through her unwavering support, practical skills, and positive outlook, Leonila contributed immensely to the wholesome and peaceful life of the family.

The twelve children of Leonila and Ponciano grew up under the guidance and influence of their parents. Throughout their upbringing, they absorbed the social, intellectual, and personal qualities demonstrated by both Leonila and Ponciano. These traits became evident in the lives of their children, shaping their character and outlook.

Most siblings used lessons from their parents to improve their lives.  Inherited values and skills helped them succeed and start their own families.

This brief narrative illustrates the origins of our family to inspire both present and future generations to follow the admirable qualities of Ponciano and Leonila. Their lives serve as an enduring model of integrity and dedication, and future generations will continue to value and uphold the legacy they created.
